a modern take on village living
LOTUS
Steinsel, 2025

This six-unit residential building was developed in direct extension to a charming historic single-family house, nestled in the sloped terrain of Steinsel’s old village center.
Situated within a protected environnement construit, the project was designed with careful consideration for both architectural integration and accessibility.
At street level, garage doors are concealed behind a refined vertical metal cladding, allowing vehicles to “disappear” into the façade without interrupting the clean, classical language of the building. The design respects the local planning constraints while providing contemporary living standards.

The challenge lay in the site's steep topography, which made it impossible to integrate a traditional underground parking solution—the ramp would have exceeded acceptable gradients. Instead, we developed a garden level with generous outdoor spaces accessible directly from two of the units. These apartments benefit from seamless transitions between indoor and outdoor living, enjoying private gardens that connect to the natural landscape.
The entire complex is barrier-free, including a fully wheelchair-accessible ground-floor apartment. The penthouse, located on the uppermost level, offers abundant daylight and a sense of elevation and comfort.Set just a few steps from the village church, the residence is surrounded by birdsong and the gentle rhythm of ringing bells—an understated and timeless place to call home.
